Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) must be worn at all times when handling material and operating the power tools mentioned throughout this process. Review the PPE Matrix for further guidance.

  1. Double check measurements of the bottom shelf and bottom cap. Align the route in the top of the bottom cap with the VBs on the bottom shelf.

  • Measure the distance from the back of the bottom fixed shelf to both cams.

  • Measure the distance from the back of the bottom cap to both drilled holes. These should be the same measurement as the cam locations on the bottom fixed shelf.

  • If they are not the same: Rotate the bottom cap and check the measurements again. If there is still an issue, use a multi-tool to extend the hole in the bottom cap so the Cam will fit inside. A final option is to replace the piece entirely.

  1. Dry fit the bottom cap.

  • Ensure the board fits along the bottom of the system with the appropriate overhang on the sides and front (refer to the elevation for placement).

  • If the bottom cap needs to be cut down in size, make the appropriate mark in pencil and cut it to size using a circular saw.

  • Dry fit again to ensure the bottom cap is the correct size.

  1. Place the bottom cap below the bottom shelf and clamp it into place.

  2. Using an 18-gauge nail gun, place 1 1/4” nails from the bottom shelf into the bottom cap to secure it into place.

  3. Place 1 1/4” screws from the bottom fixed shelf into the bottom cap. Screws should be placed at each partition.

  • Alternate placing them in the front and back of the partition along the length of the system.

Screws must always be used to secure a bottom cap. Using only nails will not suffice.

  1. Cover the screws with fast caps or wax them.

  2. Ensure the bottom cap is secure.

  • There should be no gap between the bottom shelf and the bottom cap.

  • If there is a gap: A Cam may be pressing on the board due to the hole not being deep enough or in the right place. A screw can be used to tighten the gap.

  • If the gap is still visible, the bottom cap will need to be removed and the hole for the Cam will need to be extended or deepened using the multi-tool.

  • When possible, nail from the top down into the fixed shelf.

    • If the ceiling height does not allow, or if the top cap material is thicker than 3/4”, nail from below the fixed shelf up into the top cap.

  • Place a nail in each corner.

  • Place a nail in the front and back of the top cap every 12”.

  1. Touch up nail holes.

  1. If Applicable:Prepare the partitions with a Rafix pin for the toe kick.

  2. Once the system skeleton has been completed, place the toe kick according to the elevation.

  • The toe kick may be flush or inset.

  • If the partitions were drilled for Rafix pins, the toe kick should sit against these pins.

  1. Secure the toe kick in place.

  • Using a 23-Gauge nail gun, place 1 1/4” nails every 6-8” from the bottom shelf down into the toe kick.

  • Place 1-2 nails on the side of each partition into the toe kick.

  • Use a pry bar or flat bar to lift the toe kick up to the shelf to ensure a tight fit.

  1. Touch up nail holes.

Certification Steps:

Bottom Cap:

  1. The bottom cap is in the correct location with appropriate overhangs on the sides and front.

  2. There is no gap between the bottom shelf and bottom cap.

  3. Screws have been placed through the bottom shelf into the bottom cap at each partition.

  4. Fast caps or wax crayon have been used to conceal each screw.

Top Cap:

  1. The top cap is in the correct location with appropriate overhangs on the sides and front.

  2. There is no gap between the top shelf and top cap.

  3. Nails have been placed in each corner and every 12” in the front and back of the top cap.

  4. Nail holes have been touched up.

Toe Kick/Faceplate:

  1. Toe Kick/Faceplate is correctly placed, flush or inset, according to the elevation.

  2. Toe Kick/Faceplate is attached every 6-8” along the fixed shelf.

  3. Toe Kick/Faceplate is attached with at least 1 nail in the side of the partition.
