If you want to add a slide-out shelf or small drawer in this open space below your countertop you will need to add a component first. You cannot add any parts without a component there. In this case, we will need to have an empty component.

There are a few templates in the ‘Office’ template library that you can use (empty, keyboard tray, drawer), which is the quickest and easiest method. However, it’s important to understand an alternative method if ever needed.

Another method for adding parts in an empty component is by manipulating a component to make it “empty”. The easiest way to do this is to dynamic copy one of the existing base cabinets, as it will come in at the appropriate depth and height. It will also share partitions, eliminating to need to many manually remove them (as you would if you added an empty comp to the space), as seen in the image below. Then, delete all the parts you wish to exclude, as previously discussed, as seen in the image below and to the right.

Then, you will need to remove the bottom shelf and kickplate by going to ‘Component Properties’, ‘Construction’, and unchecking the box to the right of ‘Bottom Shelf’ (left).

You will be left with what looks like an empty component, but you will see a green dashed ‘X’ when hovering over, which is indicative of a component being there. You can then add your desired parts.

Below is an example of a small drawer added to the empty component, typically used for housing pencils and small office accessories. You will want to ensure you have enough leg space for your customer to pull a chair underneath.

You can also add a simple sliding shelf, which is commonly used for computer keyboards.
