Notched Design Zones

This feature is useful when designing in a room with shallow walls that may not accommodate standard design zone depths. This method will allow the user to carry the same design zone across multiple walls and will adjust the design zone depth accordingly so that components still line up in the front.

First, add a design zone to one of the walls, preferably the deeper wall. In design zone properties, adjust the design zone to the deepest overall component depth desired if not already at desired depth. ex. 24” deep.

Right click on the on the design zone and select Extend Right/Left. In this case, the example will be extending right so that it fills the space over to Wall E.

Templates will not work with these types of design zones, as they will always come in at the deeper depth rather than adjust per wall.

The elevation view will show both walls that the design zone is covering (wall will have two labels, ex. Wall B/D), and the user can add components to either one without switching between walls. When the users adds an empty component, it will automatically adjust to the depth on either wall respectively.

If adding an empty component and array it across, CAD would recognize that it needs to stop at the side wall in between. This only works if starting on the far side of the wall (on the deepest side) and array towards the “bump”. It will also adjust to the appropriate depth per wall so all components will line up perfectly in the front.

Here is what these components look like in Plan view and in 3D.

As construction methods may vary, always check with your plan reviewer or manager before more designing complex components.
