Island or Peninsula Bench

Users can design an island or peninsula with a bench at the end. This requires adding another island plane and carefully lining it up to the existing island plane and design zones. Ensure that a bench is being added after the island or peninsula for proper alignment!

When designing with a bench, please consult with a plan reviewer to ensure everything is designed and positioned properly before finalizing the job.

In Plan view, add an island plane to the desired end of the island or peninsula. Try to line it up with the front corners of the components so the width is as close as possible to the width of the end partition.

If wanting the ensure the width is exact, users could check the Parts List for the depth of the main island/peninsula pars and adjust the width of the island plane to match.

Remember, the direction that an island plane is drawn dictates which side automatically has backing applied. Backing on island design zones cannot be manually added or edited. This direction will vary depending on where the bench is going.

A bench does not necessarily need backing unless it’s open or there are issues with suspension bracket. Ask a Plan Reviewer if unsure.

Add a design zone to the side of the island plane away from the island or peninsula.

In Elevation view, adjust the Design Zone offsets. The offsets depend on the desired look of the bench.

Typically, the offsets would be set to match (or be slightly larger for wiggle room) the bench’s countertop overhangs. So if the countertop will have the standard, default 0.38” overhangs, it may be best to set the Left and Right design zone offsets to 0.4.

Adjust as needed based on the specific overhangs in the design. This is the recommended way to design a bench as it looks odd to have the countertops extend beyond the side par of the main island/peninsula.

Note that this means that the bench component will not be a standard width. If preferring to have a standard width component, perhaps for the sake of holding specific parts, users can either:

  • Add a standard size component smaller than the depth of the main island/peninsula and center it. Ex. If the par depth of the man island/peninsula is 28.799 (can check the parts list), add a 24” deep component to the bench design zone and center it. This will leave a little extra room on either side, but this is the easiest method.

  • Adjust the depths of the main island or peninsula adjacent to the bench. While this may eliminate extra room on either side of the bench, this is tricky, and not likely the most cost-effective method. Consult with a Plan Reviewer if wanting to use this method.

Add components, parts as desired, and a countertop to create the bench. Adjust the countertop front and side overhangs as needed.

Check alignment in 3D. Adjust as needed.
