Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) must be worn at all times when handling material and operating the power tools mentioned throughout this process. Review the PPE Matrix for further guidance.

Front-Mount Crown Moulding

More than likely, if crown moulding is being installed without fascia, it means it is not extending to the ceiling.

  1. Ensure all correct pieces and materials are accounted for. This includes the material finish, style, and quantity of pieces.

  2. Install a nailer board.

  • This is used to create a bigger surface at the top of the system to nail things to, such as fascia or crown. It is a hidden element of the system and can be created out of any board/finish.

  • Using a miter saw, cut the nailer strips to the lengths that match the top of the system.

  • Once cut, lay it on top of the system flush to the front of the top shelf.

  • Insert 18-gauge 2” nails for attachment from the bottom of the top shelf.

    • If you have the option, nail the board down from the top (this is dependent on thickness and nail length).

  • Touch up nail holes.

  1. Confirm measurements of crown pieces as indicated by the elevation.

  • On a piece of paper, draw out the cuts and pieces needed; place measurements next to each cut on your drawing.

  • Consider the location of any seams in areas with multiple pieces that span the length of the system; seams should also be facing away from the eye.

  • Any seams located not on a corner should land on a partition for nailing.

  1. Cut to length using a miter saw.

  • Prior to cutting, ensure you inspect and square up the saw.

  • Inside and outside corners are to have a 45-degree miter cut.

  • When cutting seams that are not corners, use a 22.5-degree angle.

  1. Test fit all cut pieces.

  • If the piece fits, move on to the next piece.

  • If the piece does not fit, mark where it needs to be cut, or note what the new measurement needs to be, assuming it was cut too short.

  • During this step, recut any pieces that did not fit, and test fit the recuts.

  1. Place the crown 1/4” below the top of the top shelf so you are showing 1/2” of the top shelf.

  2. Install crown pieces.

  • You will want to install the crown all the way up to the ceiling across the entire system regardless of any slope, unless specifically told not to by the designer.

  • Use 18-gauge 2-inch nails for attachment; a minimum of every 10 inches into the nailer.

  • Ensure seams are lined up perfectly together and glue seams together using miter bond.

  • Place 2 1” 23-gauge pin nails on each side of the seam.

  1. Touch up all seams and nail holes.

Front-Mount Crown Moulding with Fascia

  1. Ensure all correct pieces and materials are accounted for. This includes the material finish, style, and quantity of pieces.

  2. Install a nailer board.

  1. Install fascia according to standard process.

  1. Confirm measurements of crown pieces as indicated by the elevation.

  1. Cut to length using a miter saw.

  1. Test fit all cut pieces.

  1. Install crown pieces.

  1. Touch up all seams and nail holes.
