Faced Drawers Behind Doors (with Filler) / Comp-in-Comp Design

If adding drawers with faces behind doors (sometimes called “component in a component”), the order of operations is key to ensure it is created correctly. This will require knowledge of adding shelving, uprights, filler, panels, drawers and doors - As well as knowing how to change depths of certain parts and other skills.

This is also often referred to a Component-in-Component or Comp-in-Comp design.

Steps:

First, add an empty component and set the to desired width - Users are to add 4” to the desired drawer width.

  • 18”w drawer = 22” wide component

  • 24”w drawer = 28” wide component

  • 30”w drawer = 34” wide component

  • 36”w = N/A

Change the depth of the component to at LEAST 15.5” deep.

Faced drawers require a minimum drawer depth of 12”. Therefore the minimum component depth needs to be 15.5” - It will not work in a typical 14” deep system!

Add a single fixed shelf to the component at the approximate height of the drawers. This can be edited afterwards as needed.

Add two upright shelves below shelf, aligning them with an offset of 1.24” from the left and right partition (this can be done when placing, or moved after placed).

In the Properties [Part] of each upright, add Filler between the upright and side partition. This is found under the Filler Left and/or Filler Right subheadings.

Depending on which upright the user is editing, change the filler Option for Filler Left or Right to Auto.

Add a fixed shelf a minimum of 3” from the bottom. This will sit above the bottom shelf of the component.

Essentially, there is now a cabinet sitting within the component.

Reduce the depth of the cabinet top & bottom shelves, as well as the uprights, to a minimum of 3.5” from the front of component. This is done in the Offset Front field found under Dimensions in the respective Properties [Parts] menu.

User the Apply to.. “Select” to apply to other like parts.

Users can check the 3D view to see the change of depth.

From the Parts section of the ribbon toolbar, add drawers to the opening in the cabinet. If the opening is too short or too tall, use the +/- icons on the top shelf to adjust to fit drawer height. Uprights will automatically follow.

Using the label on the front of the drawer(s), verify that they are set to exact width needed, if using standard widths. Add handles/knobs/pulls in Properties [Parts] or using the Materials tab as needed.

Using the Panel tool, add a piece of material as a toe kick to the opening under the cabinet bottom shelf.

Adjust the depth to line up with Fillers, by changing the Front Offset (to 3.5”) in the panel Properties [Part]. Check Rotate Grain so the material runs horizontally.

While optional, if a Countertop is desired, add a shelf above the top shelf, change it to the desired material/thickness, and add a text note for Plan Review to adjust.

Lastly, add ext Doors to component to cover the cabinet.

In the 3D view, verify that the cabinet and drawers are clearing the hinges.
